Lohit River Basin hydropower plans
The Union Environment Ministry’s Expert Appraisal Committee recommended environmental clearance for the 1,200 MW Kalai-II hydroelectric project on the Lohit River (a Brahmaputra tributary) at Hawai village, Anjaw district, Arunachal Pradesh. Developed by THDCIL, it is a run-of-river with pondage scheme with a concrete gravity dam and underground powerhouse; EIA consultant is WAPCOS. The EIA’s avifauna chapter omits the Critically Endangered white-bellied heron (Ardea insignis; IUCN; Wildlife Protection Act Schedule I; global population <250), dependent on free-flowing rivers and threatened by hunting and habitat loss.
