Jestha Varna Mahavihar in Lalitpur Wins 2025 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award
Jestha Varna Mahavihar (Jyaba Bahi), a 17th-century Buddhist monastery in Lalitpur, Nepal (about 300 m from UNESCO-listed Patan Durbar Square), won the 2025 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Cultural Heritage Conservation Award. Rebuilt with Indian assistance after the 2015 earthquake, it integrated modern seismic safety with traditional Bahi architecture and Newari woodcarvings; INTACH was project management consultant. It is linked to the Newar Buddhist community of Kathmandu Valley.
